Why herbal

Ever wondered why hair colour stings?

Most dyes have to prise your hair open before they can put any colour in. That is what the ammonia and peroxide are doing. It is also why your scalp burns a little, and why the smell stays in the bathroom long after you have finished.

We went the other way. Herbs, plain water, and a bit of patience.

Nine things go in. You will recognise most of them.

Henna and indigo do the colouring. The rest are the plants Indian homes have always used on hair, and our doctors kept the list to things you could name.

  • Henna

The classic natural colourant. Henna is what puts the warm base tone into the hair.

  • Indigo

Works on top of the henna. Henna alone runs reddish, and indigo is what takes it to a natural black.

  • Amla

Indian gooseberry, in Indian hair oil and hair wash for as long as anyone can remember.

  • Bhringraj

Ayurveda calls it keshraj, the king of hair. It has been going on Indian heads for centuries.

  • Hibiscus

Traditionally used to keep hair soft and the scalp comfortable.

  • Fenugreek

Methi, the seed your mother probably soaked overnight for her own hair.

  • Shikakai

A traditional hair cleanser, used long before shampoo arrived in India.

  • Reetha

Soapnut. The other half of the old Indian hair wash.

  • Ground coffee beans

For depth in the final colour.

Amla, hibiscus and other Ayurvedic hair ingredients on dark stone

Four steps, and a free afternoon.

Herbs work slower than chemicals. We would rather you waited than put bleach on your head.

  1. Mix

Empty the powder into a non-metallic bowl. Add water a little at a time and stir to a smooth, lump-free paste.

    A few minutes

  2. Rest

Let it sit before you go anywhere near your hair. This is when the herbs actually release their colour. Skip it and you will wonder why the black came out weak.

    30 to 40 minutes

  3. Apply

Work it through evenly from roots to ends with a hair colour brush. If you would rather use your hands, wear gloves.

    Take your time

  4. Leave, then rinse

The longer you leave it, the deeper the black. Rinse with plain water only for this first wash. From your next wash onwards, shampoo as normal.

    60 to 90 minutes

  • If you have used a chemical dye recently, expect the fuller result from your second application onwards.
  • Keep leftover powder in an airtight container. Best used within 12 months.
  • Patch test first, behind the ear or on the inner forearm, and watch it for 48 hours. Natural ingredients can still cause a reaction. Stop use if there is redness, itching or irritation. For external use only.

What people usually ask us

Will it cover grey completely?

Yes, that is what it is made for. Coarse or stubborn greys can take a little longer to take the colour, so give those sections extra time.

How long does the colour last?

About 20 to 25 days. Since nothing is forcing the colour inside the strand, it sits on the outside and softens gradually. You will not get that harsh line at the roots that chemical dyes leave.

Does it contain ammonia or chemical dyes?

No. No ammonia, no chemical dyes, no bleach or peroxide. The colour comes from the herbs and nothing else.

Do I need gloves? Can I shampoo afterwards?

Gloves are optional. A hair colour brush keeps it off your hands on its own, so you only need gloves if you would rather work it in by hand. For the first wash use plain water only. After that, shampoo as normal.

How long does the whole thing take?

Roughly two hours, though most of it is just waiting. The paste rests for 30 to 40 minutes, then sits on your hair for another 60 to 90. Put a film on.

I coloured my hair with a chemical dye recently. Will it work?

It will work, but be patient. The first round often looks lighter than you hoped because the old chemical coating is still there. By the second application you will see the real colour.

Should I do a patch test?

Please do, 48 hours before the first time. Behind the ear or on your inner forearm is easiest. Natural does not mean nobody reacts, plenty of people are sensitive to coffee or henna, so stop straight away if you see redness or itching. For external use only.

How do I pay? Is Cash on Delivery available?

Payment is online at checkout. We do not offer Cash on Delivery at the moment. Delivery is free on orders over ₹499.00, and ₹50.00 below that, so two packs already ship free.
